Green Building
Our dedication to sustainability is showcased in our state-of-the-art Green Building, a hub of advanced technology and environmental innovation. This facility was designed in collaboration with engineers from Kenya and Germany and constructed by a local Kenyan company. It integrates renewable energy for hot water generation, a high-efficiency water desalination plant, and sustainable waste and wastewater management systems. The Green Building also houses an ultra-modern laundry, bright and welcoming changing rooms, recreation areas, and a canteen for our staff, ensuring their well-being while upholding our commitment to sustainability.
Solar heat
Sustainability is one of our core values at Severin Sea Lodge, and our investment in solar thermal energy is a testament to this commitment. Our solar heating system, consisting of 134 solar collectors installed on the hotel roof, harnesses the sun’s energy to provide hot water throughout the property. This innovative system reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and significantly lowers our CO² emissions. We also encourage our guests to contribute by adopting water-saving practices during their stay. Together, we can make a difference in conserving Kenya's precious resources and natural beauty.
Waste Water and Waste Recycling
In 1991, Severin Sea Lodge became a pioneer on the Kenyan coast by establishing the first biological wastewater treatment plant. This facility processes all wastewater from the hotel, separating solids and oils before treating the water biologically. The cleaned water is then used for irrigation, while the remaining biosolids are repurposed as natural fertilizer on our biological farm. We also emphasize waste separation, encouraging guests to divide their waste into organic and non-organic materials, which are then collected and recycled. These efforts significantly contribute to preserving the delicate ecosystem of the Kenyan coast.
Water Desalination
With a daily water demand of 80,000 to 100,000 liters, Severin Sea Lodge has invested in its own water desalination plant to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply. This plant utilizes reverse osmosis to remove salts and minerals from brackish groundwater, providing clean, safe drinking water for our guests and staff. This initiative not only supports our operations but also benefits the local community by sharing excess capacity. Our commitment to clean water is an essential part of our sustainability mission.
Craftsman Training Center
Within our Green Building, we have established five training workshops dedicated to various craftsman professions, including electricians, plumbers, masons, carpenters, and metalworkers. These workshops focus on hands-on training, providing young Kenyans with the skills needed to secure employment or start their own businesses in the Mombasa region. By offering these opportunities, we are investing in the future of the local community and contributing to the development of skilled labor in the area.
At Severin Sea Lodge, we are proud to lead the way in sustainable hospitality, creating a positive impact on the environment and the local community while providing our guests with an unforgettable experience.
