We are thrilled to announce that Severin Sea Lodge has been awarded a Gold Eco-Tourism Certificate by Ecotourism Kenya, valid from December 2023 until November 2025. This prestigious recognition highlights our unwavering dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
At Severin Sea Lodge, we consider environmental stewardship and the preservation of our ecosystem as fundamental values. Our sustainability efforts are numerous and varied, reflecting our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and promoting responsible tourism.
1. Environment Conservation
Severin Sea Lodge collaborates with local communities and organizations in various environmental conservation projects. These include:
- International Coastal Cleanup Projects: Organized by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), we participate in beach cleanups on the first day of every month.
- Mangrove Tree Planting: In partnership with SKAL International Kenya Coast, we engage in mangrove tree planting projects.
- World Environmental Day: We commemorate this day by participating in tree planting at Mtwapa Creek and within our hotel premises.
- Plastic Reduction Initiatives: We have eliminated single-use bathroom amenities, replacing them with reusable Cinnabar green products derived from trees.
2. Solar PV: Harnessing Sunlight for Renewable Energy
We have installed a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system that converts sunlight into electricity. This sustainable energy solution reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and mitigates our environmental impact.
3. Solar Hot Water: Utilizing Solar Energy for Heating Needs
Our solar hot water systems use the sun's energy to heat water, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating methods and reducing carbon emissions associated with water heating.
4. Water Desalination Plant: Sustainable Freshwater Generation
Our water desalination plant employs innovative technologies to convert borehole or brackish water into potable water, addressing water scarcity challenges and promoting sustainable freshwater management.
5. Wastewater & Waste Recycling: Closing the Loop on Resource Management
We have implemented wastewater and waste recycling initiatives that minimize environmental pollution. Treated wastewater and recycled waste materials are used to irrigate our gardens, conserving natural resources.
6. Training Center: Empowering Sustainable Practices
The Severin Craftsman Training Center offers education and skills development programs focused on environmental sustainability. The center empowers socially disadvantaged young individuals by providing courses in electrical work, welding, carpentry, masonry, and plumbing. These programs equip participants with the knowledge and tools to implement eco-friendly practices in various sectors.
7. Eco-Friendly Towel Initiative: Reducing Unnecessary Washing
Our eco-friendly towel initiative encourages guests to hang towels they wish to reuse on the rail or hook, and only drop those they want exchanged on the floor. This practice reduces water and energy consumption associated with frequent towel washing.
These initiatives are part of our ongoing commitment to minimizing our environmental impact and promoting responsible tourism. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated team, valued guests, and partners for their support in achieving this recognition.
We look forward to continuing our journey of sustainability and creating more extraordinary experiences that contribute to the growth of Kenya's tourism industry while preserving its natural beauty.
